I’m Keerthana Gunaretnam, a passionate Scientist, and Space Enthusiast committed to pushing the frontiers of research in astrobiology, genomics, astronomy, computational biology and artificial intelligence. With a strong foundation in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and machine learning, I thrive on solving real-world problems through interdisciplinary innovation.
Currently, I serve as a Research Trainee at araCreate, Berlin, where I explore the adaptability of extremophilic fungi to extraterrestrial conditions merging my interests in space biology and biotechnology. As a Bioinformatics Scientist, at GeneLabs, I work hands on with sanger sequencing data, ensuring high quality genetic analysis to decode mutations with clinical significance. My signature tool, combines AI powered visualization and analysis of electropherograms, streamlining variant detection and alignment.
To decoding genetic mutations to exploring the survival potential of Sri Lankan fungi in Martian like terrains my work reflects a drive for both scientific and creative problem solving. I’ve also contributed to 15+ research projects ranging form diabetic retinopathy prediction to climate modelling using AI, reflecting my global outlook and curiosity driven mindset.
Outside the wetlab, I’m an active NASA Space Apps Local Lead, NASA Citizen Scientist - EXOTIC, Zooniverse and CitSci, and Ambassador of Women in Data Science - Asia, committed to mentoring others especially women in STEM.
I’m not just building models - I’m building bridges between Earth and Cosmos, between Science and Society!
