Eleni_Christoforidou
I am a neuroscientist (PhD) previously working as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Sussex (UK). I am now establishing myself as an independent scientific researcher in Cyprus (Europe) while retaining my affiliation as a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, enabling me to continue collaborative data analysis and publication under the university’s affiliation for the time being.
I specialise in molecular and cellular biology, neuroinflammation, RNA biology, neurodegeneration, biomarker discovery, bioinformatics, and computational omics.
My PhD research focused on neuroinflammation, microglial biology, and neuroimmune signalling, particularly their involvement in neurodegeneration.
My postdoctoral research focused on the discovery of non-coding RNA biomarkers in human ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) clinical trial samples, investigating their potential to reflect disease prognosis, progression, and treatment responses.
I am particularly interested in translating my expertise in neurodegeneration, neuromuscular biology, and molecular biomarker discovery into space biology, where many of the underlying biological processes overlap. I am also interested in applying integrative multi-omics, small RNA biology, longitudinal molecular profiling, and cross-species comparative approaches to emerging questions in space biology.
An additional area of interest is the development of molecular biomarkers of spaceflight-associated physiological changes, including circulating non-coding RNAs and extracellular vesicle-associated RNA signatures. I am interested in exploring whether such biomarkers could provide minimally invasive indicators of neuromuscular deterioration, cellular stress, biological adaptation, and recovery, with potential applications in astronaut health monitoring and terrestrial medicine.
