Response Due Date: March 10, 2025 – 11:59 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time
NASA invites applications for the SHINE Training Program focused on the scientific aspects of space radiation but also agency risk management strategies. The NASA Human Research Program Space Radiation Element (SRE) is initiating a short Didactic/Practicum session to support participants in gaining experience to conduct accelerator experiments at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), NASA’s premier space radiation analog facility in Brookhaven, New York. In 2022, NASA put out a call for the inaugural SHINE Space Radiation Curriculum; a virtual training program held across 2023 that targeted graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, early career investigators, and potential new investigators. This in-person SHINE Space Radiation Didactic/Practicum at the NSRL, Brookhaven National Laboratory is scheduled for the Fall of 2025.
The SHINE Space Radiation Didactic & Practicum Application uses the Request for Information (RFI) response structure in the NASA Solicitation and Proposal Integrated Review and Evaluation System (NSPIRES). Responses must be submitted electronically using the NSPIRES web site. SHINE is open to all eligible individuals as outlined in the RFI. For the full text of the SHINE RFI, including application response instructions, visit: https://tinyurl.com/2025SHINE.
Submitting a SHINE Practicum application does not guarantee course availability. NASA does not award funding for course participation nor otherwise pay for the information collected, but travel expenses for course participants will be reimbursed up to a limit given in the call. Applicants who are accepted will be notified via NSPIRES on or after April 24, 2025. Declined applicants will also be notified. The SHINE Space Radiation Didactic & Practicum will take place in-person for 2 weeks in the fall of 2025.
Questions regarding SHINE will be accepted by email only and must be addressed to jsc-hrp-space-radiation-element@mail.nasa.gov using a subject line that states “SHINE Space Radiation Didactic & Practicum 2025 Application”. Depending on the nature of received questions, NASA may i) respond on an individual basis by email or ii) may post responses that are intended to address inquiries of broader interest and general clarification in an FAQ document on the NSPIRES website for SHINE.
