2024 Joint CEA Workshop

July 9-12, 2024
NASA, USDA, and DOE are hosting a workshop on Controlled Environment Agriculture.

I expect this workshop will have a direct impact on the development of future Bioregenerative Life Support Systems. You can still submit an abstract @PlantAWG

Here is a message about it from Dr. Kai Ling at the USDA.

Dear Colleagues:
It is only a little over a month before the 2024 National Workshop on Controlled Environment Agriculture to be held in Charleston, SC on July 9-12, 2024. Thanks to the talented scientific organizing committee, we have developed an exciting program with 2-day intensive oral presentations by invited experts on CEA in the U.S. and around the world, which will be followed by a field educational tour on the third day and a half day on July 12th for a brainstorming session on challenges and opportunities in CEA and the needs for research. There are still opportunities for poster presentations. You can submit an abstract for a poster, check meeting agenda (draft) and see the invited speakers through the meeting website: https://sites.google.com/view/cea2024jointworkshop/home

We are honored to inform you that the USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics (Dr. Sanah Baig), Associate Administrator (Acting) of USDA-Agricultural Research Service (Dr. Nora Lapitan), and Executive Director of the CEA Alliance (Mr. Tom Stenzel) have confirmed to make their opening remarks for the meeting on the first day (July 9th).

I would like to remind those who are interested in attending the meeting to please make your meeting registration and hotel reservation soon. By checking with the hotel reservations from both designated hotels, there are still nice rooms available for selection. The block of rooms with a government per diem rate for Charleston ($249/night) is still available, but not for long. The cut off date for Francis Marion Hotel is June 8th and for Embassy Suites is June 14th. After that, there is no guarantee for a government rate.

Please make your hotel reservation and meeting registration through the meeting website: https://sites.google.com/view/cea2024jointworkshop/home

Best regards,

Kai

@MarshallPorterfield I hope that this link is useful for your team.

Looks like I’ll be presenting at this workshop!
I plan to share about Plant Microbiome and other Microbial data sets in the Open Science Data Repository.

I’m participating in this as a private citizen and not as an extension of my usual job duties, so I’m looking forward to getting some feedback from the Analysis Working Groups on my presentation.

Here is a copy of the abstract that I submitted.
I was invited to give a talk. I’ll be presenting on July 10 during this session:
1:00 pm – 2:15 pm: Pest and disease surveillance and management, and microbiome (Moderators: Pat Wechter of Clemson University and Matt Mickens of NASA)

Abstract: The challenges associated with feeding our growing population over the next 50 years will require an exchange of information at a level beyond what we have encountered in human history. A major driver of innovation is the free exchange of ideas within a robust and vibrant community of diverse researchers. Science and Engineering supported by Open Data enables rapid innovation. NASA’s Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) and its Analysis Working Groups has become a source of innovation for the plant and microbial space biology community. OSDR has primarily focused on transcriptional responses of model organisms to space biology environments, aiming to generate biomarkers for stress detection and assisted breeding strategies. But we are expanding the scope of our repository every day as we work with subject matter experts to expand the types of assays we can host. OSDR contains more than 25 studies that look at microbiota. Several studies in the repository are specific to the microbiome of plants, plant pathogens, and food safety. This talk will share about the current data sets in OSDR, highlight the current efforts of Analysis Working Groups, and share how you can get involved.
