National Academies Seminar Just Began: Human Exploration Across the Moon

Hi @AWGall

The National Academies public briefing on Human Exploration Across the Moon is live right now (10:00–11:30 AM PT / 1:00–2:30 PM ET). The study committee co-chairs are presenting priority science destinations for crewed missions beyond the lunar poles.

Report: Key Non-Polar Destinations Across the Moon to Address Decadal-level Science Objectives with Human Explorers

The report recommends four non-polar landing sites, each tied to Decadal Survey (OWL) and Moon to Mars objectives: Bhabha Crater, Mons Hadley, Orientale Basin, and Aristarchus Plateau. For each site it lays out in situ measurements, sample return needs, and the case for why humans (rather than rovers or robotic sample return) are required.

Why this matters for AWGs: the study included a dedicated Panel on Human and Biological Science, and the committee covers musculoskeletal health (Aenor Sawyer) and radiation biology (Gayle Woloschak). Short-duration sorties (two crew, 1–4 EVAs) at these sites set the operational envelope for the next round of human research. Partial gravity, dust exposure, and radiation at non-polar latitudes all raise questions OSDR data can help scope. For the SI/ML and Multi-Omics groups, these site selections shape which flight analogs and mission profiles we need to model.

Post your takeaways below. I’ll add mine after the briefing wraps.

My main takeaway from the event, was it was an alarm I need to spend a tremendous amount of time studying the moon. I’ve spent a long long time studying any and all details about low Earth orbit, time to switch gears and study the moon in serious detail.

For example I wasnt intimately familar with the 4 selected sites the committee pointed to as reccomendations to human exploration and their rationale for the selection was quite interesting
