🚨 HELP! HELP! 🚨 Masters Thesis Topic 🚨

:rotating_light: HELP! HELP! :rotating_light: I’m Aamir and I’m on the home stretch of finishing my Master’s in Applied Mathematics, but I need your help to pick the perfect thesis topic! :scream:

Here’s where YOU come in: I want to dive into something that blends my love for space biology with math. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or resources that could point me in the right direction, I’m all ears! Bonus: I can help you, and I get a Master’s degree. Everybody wins!:muscle::sparkles::rabbit2:

For a bit about me: I have a solid foundation in math (undergrad in math) and am well-versed in linear algebra, probability theory, and more abstract areas like logic. Naturally, I’ve ventured into machine learning, and this semester I added quantum computing to the mix. I’m actively working on projects that combine quantum machine learning, and I’ve already completed one!

What really excites me, though, is blending math and biology! I love supporting biology projects by analyzing data and communicating results in ways that make the methods intuitive and accessible. Imagine combining MATH + BIOLOGY = Mabiothology (pronounced ma-bi-o-thol-o-gy—yep, I just made that up—let’s make it a thing!:laughing:).

With next semester kicking off the first week of January, I need to lock down a thesis topic by January 10th (that’s the deadline my advisors set). Any help, suggestions, or guidance you can offer would mean the world to me! :earth_africa::bulb:

Thanks in advance for your amazing support!

Thank You,

Hi Aamir! Nice post - it got our attention, well played!

A good starting place would be to reach out to @lauren.sanders @james.casaletto @frank.soboczenski @jgong and a few others in the @AIMLawg for ideas. Also, make sure to attend the AIML AWG next Tuesday to maybe spit ball ideas?

Best of luck, i don’t have an idea off the top of my head, although, maybe… You may want to check out the knowledge graph tool which also can leverage ML SPOKE. Perhaps running a project using the SPOKE knowledge graph tool, to mine human and model organism data could be a project? Maybe also DM @canelson @lauren.sanders and myself. Could be some interesting aspects of math to be integrate and yet to be figured out?

Previous papers using SPOKE, which may get some ideas of yours flowing: MS & Spoke, Parkinson’s & Spoke, Alzheimers and Spoke, and an early proof of concept paper using only spaceflight rodent data and Spoke. I know with almost certainty the future between ML and knowledge graphs are going to pay off in the biomedical and space health/space biology world.

Cheers
-Ryan

I love math! While I am not a mathematician myself my Dad has a PhD in math so I grew up thinking a lot about numbers. Happy to talk over ideas, love a good brainstorm session. Let me know!

Thanks Ryan! I’ll look into SPOKE for some inspiration. I recently joined the AIML AWG so I’ll start reaching out and come to the meeting next week to talk ideas.

Thank you Windy! I’ll reach out to you soon. I’d love to brainstorm on this as well!

I love your enthusiasm for combining math and biology! For your thesis, I recommend checking out my article: Quantum Bioinformatics in Briefings in Bioinformatics.

A fascinating direction is studying quantum effects on biological systems in extreme space environments, like the weak magnetic and gravitational fields of deep space. This area bridges quantum computing, quantum biology, and bioinformatics, offering plenty of opportunities for mathematical exploration. There is a significant knowledge gap in understanding how quantum phenomena might influence biological processes at higher molecular levels under conditions like the weak magnetic and gravitational fields of deep space (beyond Earth orbit).

I’m currently working on a related paper and can confidently say that this is fertile ground for a mathematician interested in space biology.

Best of luck with the final stages of your Master’s journey—I’m sure you’ll accomplish great things!

Hello @aamir , I would recommend you look at Integrated Mathematical Oncology | Moffitt. This group blends math and biology. If you need an intro, let me know.
