Ecology and Bioregenerative In Situ Resource Utilization Systems

Are you interested in Controlled Environment Ecology? Perhaps you’d like to get involved with a project called Arcology X. Here is an announcement from our colleague Colin Lennox.

Hi All!

Arcology X is pleased to announce we are doing monthly meetings devoted to bio sciences.

Same Zoom Link as always (reach out to him via email: colin@ecoislandsllc.com for the link)

Those who have attended in the past have seen a lot of technologies which trend towards architectural, mechanical, software and biz development. But, we’ve watched the attendance/interest of the bio-centric members wane. The ecology informs the rest. It’s the foundation and the reason.

So… ArcologyX Bio Night! Once a month on the second Thursday.

This Thursday we’d like to draft something like a venn diagram to help to identify the practical gaps in current beclss and bisru systems (feedback loops, regolith bio processing, parameters to be added to the Gaia OS, alternative testing techniques like how to use SEM and XRD, metagenomics…).

We’d like to publish our findings as they are developed and tested in the Arcologies, the first to be built this summer/fall. We’ve got lots of opportunities to home those forced to move as the climate crisis continues, win gants, find funding Angels, bootstrap, and fail faster towards solid solutions for Earth and Up.

See you Thursday at 6pm EST on zoom!

Cheers,

Colin

Bugger. I missed this somehow. Hope to join in the future. Is there a calendar invite somewhere I can drag into mine?

Colin asked me to share this open invitation with our AWG community:

Hi All!

Keeping with the second Thursday of the month 3pm pac / 4 Mtn / 6 eastern, ArcologyX will be hosting Bio-Night!!!

On bio night we generally discuss biological environmental closed systems and bio-in-situ resource utilization topics with a focus on practical terrestrial applications. Fail faster where it’s safe, so to speak, and make it useful to the masses yesterday.

Last month we dove into a bit about wetlands and the Winogradsky column. (transcript available)

This month we’d like to dive much deeper, into “Dark Oxygen”, and a personal favorite topic of mine, manganese nodules!

Of particular note are the similar voltages of the Mn nodules (0.95 volts, purported) and (near as i can tell) 0.9 volts of (hypothetically) self organized winogradsky bioelectric systems with paired electrodes in both oxic and methanic niches.

These ancient, but poorly understood, aphotic phenomena might even shift the hypothesis (origin, timeframe?) for the establishment of basic and advanced life on terra, perhaps illuminating the Fermi paradox itself! (Looking at you Isaac =)

Here on terra-firma, this evidence may further research into practical winogradsky effects and bio-electric generation. Or, it may show a whole new form of in-situ abiotic power generation (a spiderweb of drone laid wires, nodule to nodule). Or both, one aiding the other and vice versa! Let’s discuss =).

Please use this zoom link, which is the new standard link. We meet every Thursday at 1800 est, and do bio-night every second thursday.

See you Thursday!

@jgong since you’re interested in both astrobiology and space biology, this might be especially interesting for you!
