Hi everyone, I’m Val, an attending physician anesthesiologist and clinical researcher from Boston, MA. My research is mainly focussed on perioperative brain health, particularly why some older and frail patients develop delirium or cognitive changes after surgery, and whether things like intraoperative EEG and other physiologic data can help us predict those outcomes.
My background is clinical, so most of my research so far has used more traditional epidemiologic and regression methods. I recently started my data science journey and I’m hoping to build toward signal processing and machine learning.
What drew me to OSDR was that a lot of the research questions felt familiar. An anesthetized surgical patient and an astronaut are obviously in very different environments, but in both cases we’re studying people exposed to an unusual physiologic state for a defined period and then looking at cognitive and functional recovery.
I’m especially interested in learning how you approach the neural and physiologic datasets, and I’d also be very interested in joining projects where my clinical perspective or experience with outcomes research could be useful.
Looking forward to working with you all!

Hi everyone
My name is Sarah from Dominican Republic and I´m a chemical engineering student currently in my first term. I want to do a master’s degree in astrobiology afterwards to dedicate myself professionally to that field.
What interested me about OSDR it´s the possibility of gaining experience, learning the procedures for research and interacting with people who share my interests. I decided to dedicate myself to science this current year, so I´m kind of figuring out what I´m doing and what “it´s my thing”. It´s been kind of a wild ride, to be honest.
Looking forward on meeting everyone and working together!

Hi everyone!
My name is Pooja, and I’m currently working at the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, where my work involves stem cell technology, drug screening, and disease modeling.
My long-term goal is to pursue a Ph.D. combining my interests in biophysics and space biology. I’m especially curious about how the space environment affects biological systems and how technologies such as stem cells and disease models can help us better understand these effects.
I joined the OSDR working group to expand my knowledge of space biology, gain experience working with space-related biological data, and learn from people with different scientific and technical backgrounds. I’m new to the group and still exploring the field, but I’m eager to learn and would be excited to contribute my laboratory and biotechnology experience to collaborative projects wherever it may be helpful.
I’m looking forward to meeting you all, learning together, and hopefully contributing to some exciting projects!
