Invitation to join GeneLab for High Schools Final Presentation - July 25th 9:30 am - 12:30 pm US Pacific Time

Dear AWG Members @AnimalAWG @ALSDAawg @FemaleReproAWG @PlantAWG @MicrobesAWG @MultiOmicsAWG @FemaleReproAWG @AIMLawg,

We would like to invite you to please join us on Thursday July 25 from 9:30am - 12:30pm (US Pacific) for the GeneLab for High Schools (GL4HS) final presentations. GL4HS is a four-week intensive program for rising high school juniors and seniors, and high school teachers. GL4HS provides student- and teacher-interns an opportunity to immerse themselves in space life sciences with a specific focus on omics-based bioinformatics research, the science of collecting and analyzing complex biological data. The interns have learned how to analyze RNA sequencing data (transcriptomics) using the UseGalaxy platform. This year they have focused on tissues from mouse, Drosophila (fruit fly), and Arabidopsis (Thale cress/plant). The interns have analyzed gene expression differences between flight and ground samples and generate novel hypotheses and research proposals to test their hypotheses. This year, we continued with our expanded program of 28 students who have worked in teams of 4 to analyze data, develop their hypotheses, and formulate their presentations/proposals. Teacher interns have also developed new curriculum modules based on GeneLab and space biology data for incorporation into their classrooms. The schedule for the presentations can be found below.

9:40 – 10:00 am – Colon-ial space mice
Title: Spaceflight-Induced Circadian Disruption: Exploring the cosmic impact on Immunoglobulins, T-Cell Suppression, and Colonic Inflammation
