New PP AWG member introduction

Hello everyone! @PPawg

I’m Franco A. Pavan, a Master’s student in Biology at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina :argentina:). I have research experience across histology, virology, and microbiology.

My thesis focuses on Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a GRAS-status and non-GMO probiotic strain already established for human consumption, which I’m developing as a carrier for making functionalized foods with multiple applications such as an oral vaccine platform or surface display of proteins of interest. Another part of my thesis characterizes how LGG tolerates and responds to environmental stress, changing its cell-wall components.

I also have some experience with data analysis in R and Python and have already enrolled in the GL4U course so that I can help as much as possible from the beginning!

Outside the lab, one of my passions is science communication. I’ve taught kids and adults about topics such as evolution, microbiology, and biotechnology at public events.

I’d love to learn more about all of you and your line of work!! Looking forward to connecting and collaborating soon!

Hello Franco A. Pavan, it is very interesting to think about functional foods containing probiotics. My little dog eats treats with probiotics, and I notice a big difference in her health after using them.

Great observation Michelle!

Probiotics contribute to the gut health of both humans and dogs. In fact, LGG is one of the most studied for many reasons such as its immunostimulatory properties and gut adherence! They are also important for good mental health in both species, as the gut-brain axis research suggest.

That is one of the reasons why I find this field so exciting! The same platform I am currently developing for my thesis could also help many dogs and other pets!
